Colorado Hay Report

Compared to last week, prices were mostly steady with firm undertones.
Activity and demand good in all classes. The NASS Colorado Crop Progress and
Condition report for the week ending September 17, 2017 states that warm and dry
conditions accelerated crop maturity last week, according to the Mountain
Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA.
Isolated precipitation was received in several counties, but most remained hot
and dry again last week, causing concern for non-irrigated crop and rangeland
conditions which have suffered from a continued lack of moisture. Corn silage
harvest progressed significantly with good conditions for fieldwork last week.
A reporter in the northeastern district noted that some dryland corn was
harvested for silage last week in lieu of harvesting for grain due to dry
conditions. A reporter noted mountain pastures in these counties remain wet
with continued moisture. Pasture and Range conditions were rated 12 percent
poor, 27 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Alfalfa crop
condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 57
percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Alfalfa third cutting is 78 percent
complete and fourth cutting is 13 percent complete. All prices reported are FOB
at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay.
