Iowa Hay Summary

Week Ending December 07, 2018

Between sleet and the start of hunting season, both sellers and bidders were sparse
across Iowa. Availability of top quality alfalfa continues to be limited and it may
be that this hay is just not there. Most of Iowa is without snow cover, allowing
producers to push their cows onto cornstalks as corn harvest is finished.

"The wetter than normal fall months have resulted in Iowa having abundant shallow ground
water going into the winter months," said Tim Hall, Iowa DNR’s coordinator of hydrology resources.
September, October and November saw temperatures about 2 degrees below normal, but 6 inches more
rainfall than normal. That makes it the third wettest fall on record, and the wettest since 1941.
Temperatures in November were 6.6 degrees cooler than usual.
