Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
Welcome to 2020 and new decade. Hay prices remain steady with a lack of high quality hay available at many markets. Round bales are discounted compared to other packages. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices were steady and there is a demand for straw. Small square bales averaged $4.60 a bale (range of $2.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $64.00 per bale (a range of $40.00 to $90.00). Large round bale straw averaged $58.00 per bale (a range of $40.00 - $85.00).

In Nebraska, hay sold steady, demand is light in 2020. Some are having a hard time delivering hay because of muddy conditions. In Iowa, hay prices are lower compared to prices earlier in the fall.

In South Dakota, prices are firm with good demand for all types and quality of hay and straw. Greatest demand is from out of state buyers.

In Missouri, hay business is very slow. Hay supply is moderate to heavy, demand is light; prices are steady. Weather concern as moisture is in the forecast.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady, with a supply of hay available at market. In Kansas, hay trade and demand is slow. Prices remain steady on a limited test. Rainfall has reduced concern of drought in the state.

In Wisconsin, prices remain strong for top quality hay. Demand for hay and straw.
