Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Hay market price is steady. Drought areas have strong prices with very tight supply. Hay market may be lower where there is adequate hay supply. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady. Small square bales averaged $4.80 a bale (range of $3.00 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $51.00 per bale (a range of $27.00 to $82.00). Large round bale straw averaged $49.00 per bale (range of $30.00 – $82.00).

In Nebraskaround bales sold at steady prices with a strong market for large squares. Good demand this week for all classes of hay.    

In South Dakota, all classes of hay have a good demand with steady prices. Cold and snow have feeders looking for hay and bedding.

In Missouri, hay supply is light; demand is moderate, with steady prices. Weather is causing some mud conditions.

In Kansasprices are steady with moderate demand. Trade activity is slow to moderate. Drought conditions has people looking for hay, but very little supply, equals higher prices.  

In Wisconsin, prices for dairy quality hay are steady. Overall Wisconsin has a good supply of forage. Dairy hay prices are good, but lower quality may be discounted.
