Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Market prices were steady this week. Drought areas had highest prices on alfalfa hay and small squares were in demand. Some markets commented that there was a limited supply at auctions this week. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady. Small square bales averaged $5.15 a bale (range of $2.50 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $54.00 per bale (a range of $32.00 to $95.00). Large round bale straw averaged $42.00 per bale (range of $30.00 – $50.00). There is a limited supply at auctions.

In Nebraskahay market was steady this week with a moderate demand. Rainfall has brighten people’s spirits going into spring.     

In South Dakota, Limited sales and limited demand this past week as many are sold out of last year’s crop…

In Missouri, supply is light, demand is light. Good news is some rain and many are harvesting rye and wheat for forage. Some rainfall has improved the mood.

In Kansasprices are steady with good demand. Trade activity is slow. With rainfall this past week some are feeling better, but many areas of state still have drought concerns.  

In Wisconsin, prices for hay are steady with a good overall supply of hay n the state. While areas to west are dry and short of forage, not much talk of hay moving west.
