Colorado Hay Report

Compared to last week, trade activity and demand moderate. Untimely rains
continue to hinder farmers from putting 1st cutting down in an effort to find a
window that allows hay to be put up without getting rained damage. Alfalfa
growers in Southwest Colorado are indicating that very few loads of 1st cutting
are heading to dairies in Texas due to prices offered. Hay in the San Luis
Valley is getting baled with quality expected to be high and yields a little
lower than normal. According to the NASS Colorado Crop Progress Report for week
ending June 23, 2019, statewide, stored feed supplies were rated 6 percent very
short, 27 percent short, 60 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus, while 1st
cutting alfalfa hay progress is at 69 percent. Due to the upcoming holiday, the
next available report will be Thursday, July 11, 2019. All prices reported are
FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of
hay. If you have hay for sale or need hay, use the services of the Colorado
Department of Agriculture website: www.coloradoagriculture.com.
