Wyoming Hay Summary

Week ending June 28, 2019

Compared to last week new crop hay sold fully steady. Demand was good
from out of state buyers for large and small squares. Spotty rain showers
across different reporting regions of the state has made it very tough
for producers to bale hay. Quite a lot of first cutting alfalfa left to
cut and bale. So, far the first cutting of alfalfa has been producing
less hay than typical due to weevil infestation, cooler than normal temps
and not enough warm degree days to aid in the growth of the plant. Some
of the questionable bales that are a tick damp have made their way to
feedlots or grinding operations to be used in a quick fashion before the
hay turns caramel or other undesirable colors. All prices are dollars per
ton FOB the field or hay barn unless otherwise noted.
