Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Markets are steady to strong this week. Good dairy quality hay continues to hold steady prices in the market. Lower quality hay is sharply discounted. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady. Small square bales averaged $4.00 a bale (range of $2.75 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $54.00 per bale (a range of $38.00 to $65.00). Large round bale straw averaged $55.00 per bale (range of $30.00 – $70.00).

In Nebraska, alfalfa hay sold steady to $5.00 stronger this week. With limited carryover hay 2022 has more concern than 2012 for livestock people. In Iowa, no report.

In South Dakota, prices for all hay types is firm to strong. Very good demand for dairy quality hay at the market. Some calves are being weaned and sent to market.   

In Missouri, very good demand for hay. Limited supply may make things interesting. Many livestock persons are considering early cull or market of animals.

Southwest Minnesota, no report. In Kansas, a calmer week in the market as many are busy in the field.  

 In Wisconsin, prices for dairy quality hay are steady. Overall Wisconsin has a good supply of forages for 2022. Prices may change if supply must move west.
