Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Markets were steady this week. Dairy quality hay continues to hold prices at the auction. There is a good supply of lower quality hay, but price is discounted. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady. Small square bales averaged $4.75 a bale (range of $2.75 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $59.00 per bale (a range of $40.00 to $110.00). Large round bale straw averaged $51.00 per bale (range of $30.00 – $70.00).

In Nebraska, alfalfa hay sold steady this week. Compared to last week very little trade activity. In Iowa, no report.

In South Dakota, prices for alfalfa hay is steady. Very good demand for all classes of hay at the market. Many reports of a lighter inventory of hay compared to last year.   

In Missouri, moderate demand for hay with a limited supply may make things interesting. Prices have remained steady. Some drought areas are feeding hay already in 2022.

Southwest Minnesota, no report. In Kansasprices are steady with good demand for hay. Drought has local hay prices rising in the state and concerns of how to manage livestock.   

 In Wisconsin, prices for dairy quality hay are steady. Overall Wisconsin has a good supply of forages for 2022. Prices may change if supply must move west.
