Hay market activity and demand moderate for all classes of hay; prices steady.
Rain fell in many areas over the past weekend. Farmers are spraying for weevil
and trying to complete corn planting, in between rain drops. Hay season is
rapidly approaching and first cutting will be here in a few short weeks. The
U.S. Drought Monitor indicated that the abnormally dry (D0) category increased
to 50.65 pct, while moderate drought (D1) decreased to 8.55 pct. According to
the NASS Kansas Crop Progress and Condition Report, top soil moisture rated 4
pct very short, 13 pct short, 70 pct adequate and 13 pct surplus. Subsoil
moisture rated 5 pct very short, 20 pct short, 70 pct adequate and 5 pct
surplus. Hay and roughage supplies rated 1 pct very short, 7 pct short, 83 pct

Cow alfalfa, 75.00-95.00, with an instance at 110.00. Fair/Good grinding
alfalfa, 85.00-95.00. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies,
110.00-120.00, with an instance at 130.00. New crop ground and delivered
120.00-130.00. The week of 4/9-4/15, 9,119T of grinding alfalfa and 1,813T of
dairy alfalfa were delivered. Grass hay: bluestem, large rounds 65.00-75.00.
Brome: large rounds 55.00-65.00. Sudan: large rounds 40.00-45.00. Corn stalks,
ground and delivered 70.00-80.00. The average paid by feedlots on March 1 for
alfalfa ground and delivered was 108.59, up 2.46 from last month, usage was
