Demand and Sales Comments
The hay market displayed some weakness this past week. While weather has been nice over much of the Midwest, some livestock people are using pasture before snow covers them. Round bales are showing weakness. As always there is demand for dairy quality hay. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices were on a steady trend this week. Quality has a great impact on straw prices. Small square bales averaged $4.60 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $38.00 per bale (a range of $25.00 to $75.00). Large round bale straw averaged $41.00 per bale (a range of $18.00 - $55.00).
In Nebraska, alfalfa hay sold steady with moderate demand in local market. Very good demand for hay moving out of state. In Iowa, prices on all types of hay were mostly steady.
In South Dakota, alfalfa hay had moderate to good demand with greatest interest in dairy quality hay. Grass hay was in demand as unweaned calves are entering the feedlots.
In Missouri, nice week of weather may have continued a slow demand in the hay market.
In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady with a limited supply of quality hay at the market.
In Kansas, hay market has steady prices, but demand and amount traded backed off. Most of the hay sales were out of state.
In Wisconsin, prices are steady with demand for dairy quality large square bales, while round bales are discounted.
