Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Hay market this week is steady with some downward pressure. Green grass may contribute to the market actions. Dairy quality hay is still in demand, but markets may have a limited supply. If you need forage or have forage to sell or straw, connect to the Farmer-to-Farmer webpage at http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu/. You may contact your local county agriculture educator if you need help placing an ad. There is no charge for the service.

Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady to weaker with a limited supply of straw. Small square bales averaged $5.00 a bale (range of $4.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $41.00 per bale (a range of $20.00 to $75.00). Large round bale straw averaged $29.00 per bale (a range of $15.00 - $45.00).

In Nebraska, hay prices were steady with demand for ground and delivered alfalfa. There have been a number of contacts from feedlots on contracting hay.

In Iowa, supply is good, demand is steady, and prices are steady.

In South Dakota, alfalfa prices are steady to firm. Good demand for all classes of hay. Drought concerns are pushing some buyers.

In Missouri, prices are steady with moderate supply and limited sales. Rainfall may delay harvest a few days.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady with a supply of lower quality hay at the market.

In Kansas, market prices were steady, demand is light to moderate. Many are holding off harvest as weather has delay alfalfa growth. Some early harvest is a result of weevil pressure.

In Wisconsin, prices are steady for dairy quality hay. Lower quality or higher moisture hay is being discounted.
