Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
The hay market is steady to stronger. A note from November USDA hay report, “Alfalfa saw a price of $178/ton being the average nationwide in 2018, while the October price in 2017 was lower at $153/ton.”

For Nebraska, hay sold unevenly steady this week with a light demand. Warm temperatures and snow melt has allowed cattle to walk for feed rather than be fed forages.  For Iowa, prices have
increased reflecting a short supply of top quality hay availability. Sellers may bring hay to the
market after the first of the year.

In South Dakota, good demand for quality alfalfa hay with an increase in prices. Large squares are
hard to find and buy as many farmers made round bales with our summer weather patterns. Lower
quality hay is discounted and many beef herds are back on corn stalks as snow disappears.

For Missouri, hay prices are steady, with moderate to good demand and a good to light supply
available. Many fields still have combines in them, which is not as odd as hay equipment in fields
in December.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady. A theme at the market is limited supply of quality hay
and lower quality hay being discounted.

In Wisconsin, steady demand and price for hay. There is a limited supply of quality alfalfa hay.

Straw prices include oat, barley, or wheat straw, not soybean. Prices were steady. Markets are
looking for straw and there is a good demand. Small square bales averaged $3.15 a bale (range of
$1.50 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $48.00 per bale (a range of $33.00 to $71.00).
Large round bale straw averaged $41.00 per bale (a range of $35.00 - $63.00). Wheat straw will
demand a slightly higher price and quality does impact price higher or lower.

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last report: All hay classes traded fully steady as we
close out the year. Demand was good on limited to moderate supply. A
variety of hay continued to be contracted and bought out to meet demands
of dairies, feed yards and livestock owners. Coastal Bermuda has become
difficult to find as well as the freight to get it to the Panhandle tacks
on costs. Producers in East, North and South Texas report there may be a
shortage due to army worms, early frosts and rain hampering their 4th
cutting. Prices for hay and pellets quoted per ton except where noted.

Missouri Weekly Hay Summary

Week ending 12/21/2018

Much unlike the month of November temperatures over the last two weeks
continue to be above average with several days getting very close to the
60 degree mark this past week. Many have said Mother Nature is very
confused this year but farmers have also found themselves that way as
there combines are still running in some fields as not all grain has been
harvested yet. Even more odd is to see hay equipment in the fields and
there was more than one report of just that this week. This spurred a lot
of conversation as it is highly unusual. Aside from the novelty of it and
debate about quality it basically comes down to farmers are trying to
find a cost feasible way to feed cattle. Although this hay is not the
answer high quality horse hay is in very short supply and carrying the
highest demand. The supply of hay light to moderate. Hay prices are
steady. Hay demand is moderate to good. The Missouri Department of
Agriculture has a hay directory available for both buyers and sellers. To
be listed, or for a directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/
for listings of hay http://agebb.missouri.edu/haylst/ (All prices f.o.b.
and per ton unless specified and on most recent reported sales price
listed as round bales based generally on 5x6 bales with weights of
approximately 1200-1500 lbs).

Kansas Hay Market Report

DUE TO THE HOLIDAYS, THIS WILL BE THE FINAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR. THE NEXT
REPORT WILL BE ISSUED ON JANUARY 8TH 2019.

****MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR****

Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 11,090/4,937 Last week: 9,475/6,002 Last year: 9,085/4,454

Hay market trade activity is slow to moderate. Prices are generally steady and
demand is moderate. Alfalfa hay supplies remain a concern for some but hay can
still be found. We should be able to get to new crop with the abundance of feed
hay and silage. Sunny skies and mild temperatures have been the rule of late.
That should help dry out fields so farmers can harvest the rest of their crops.
Mud has been a recurring problem this fall and winter and there will be a lot of
dirt work needing to be completed before planting this spring. According to the
U.S. Drought Monitor, the abnormally dry (D0) category has almost completely
disappeared from our state. Only a small amount remains along the extreme
southern border of four southeastern counties. The abnormally dry (D0) category
is at .41 pct. If you have hay for sale, and/or need hay here in Kansas, use the
services of the Internet Hay Exchange: www.hayexchange.com/ks.php.

Weekly Montana Hay Report

Compared to last week: Alfalfa hay sold steady to weak. Demand
continues to be mostly light to moderate on heavy offerings.
The relatively mild winter continues as southern Montana has
temperatures in the 50's while much of the rest of the state
remains in the 30's and 40's. Snowfall has been limited
so far this winter and pastures and range remain mostly open.
This continues to curb feeding needs. With heavy supplies
of hay put up across the state this year and light demand
seen so far producers are beginning to look to sell hay.
Many of the largest sales seen over the last few weeks have
been to out of state buyers. Dry conditions in Idaho, Oregon,
Wyoming, and Colorado continue to help sell hay across the
state. Additionally, heavy supplies of round bales continues
to be seen as many ranches put up rounds. Large price differences
can be seen between round and squares this year. This is
particularly true with higher quality grades. All prices are
dollars per ton and FOB unless otherwise noted. ***This
will be the last report released this year. Next report will
be Jan. 4th 2018***

South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: Alfalfa steady to instances of 25.00 higher.
Too few reported sales of grass to compare. Very good demand for high
feed value hay suitable for dairies as supplies of that quality are
much more limited. Large Squares are hard to come by as the wet summer
made for poor curing conditions, producers had to put the hay up in a
round bale, in order for it to keep. Good demand remains for stalks and
straw as the wet weather this fall has greatly increased the need for
bedding. With the moisture received the past few weeks the window for
baling corn stalks has closed. Beef cows are out grazing corn stalks
in areas that missed the heavier snows, which is helping them to lessen
the need for forage supplementation. Warmer than average weather in the
forecast for the weekend through next week. All hay and straw sold by
the ton FOB, unless otherwise noted.

East River:
Alfalfa: Supreme: Small Squares, 6.50-7.50 per bale; Large Squares,

Missouri Weekly Hay Summary

Week ending 12/14/2018

A bit milder weather this week as temperatures rose to more comfortable
levels. Mud is however still an issue in many places and making feeding
difficult. There continues to be some looming concerns about hay supplies,
especially given that feeding levels were more than normal most of
November and these are valid concerns in many local areas. Overall
though even with lower supplies nationwide there is still hay that can be
found but many are not thrilled about prices or distance to get it. The
supply of hay light to moderate. Hay prices are steady. Hay demand is
moderate to good. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay
directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a
directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of hay
http://agebb.missouri.edu/haylst/ (All prices f.o.b. and per ton unless
specified and on most recent reported sales price listed as round bales
based generally on 5x6 bales with weights of approximately 1200-1500
