Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

The hay market is steady with signs of weakness as supply increased across the Midwest. Demand was steady and low quality hay was discounted.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady this week with a moderate demand. The common theme is buyers are
waiting until the last bale is fed before they make the next purchase.  For Iowa, top quality hay
is in short supply. Both buyers and sellers are sparse because of weather and the start of hunting
season.

In South Dakota, alfalfa hay sold steady this week with very good demand for alfalfa hay. Dairy
prices continue to impact the hay market. There is a demand for quality grass hay as cattlemen wean
calves and move them to feed yards.

For Missouri, hay prices are steady, with moderate demand and a light supply available. Soft ground
conditions have limited the movement of trucks in and out of yards to early morning.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady. Mostly round bale hay available and round bales are
generally discounted.

In Wisconsin, steady demand and price for hay. Low quality hay is discounted depending if it was
stored or was on the fence row. Some comments from local markets that straw is available as there
is a demand for straw.

Straw prices were steady. Some markets are looking for straw with colder temperatures and weather
conditions. Small square bale straw averaged $3.15 a bale (range of $1.50 to $6.00). Large square
bale straw averaged $45.00 per bale (a range of $30.00 to $65.00). Large round bale straw averaged
$47.00 per bale (a range of $25.00 - $73.00). Straw quality does impact price.
