Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments 

Wide spread rain in Wisconsin has eased some drought concerns in areas of the state. Dairy quality hay continues to be in demand. The market was steady this past week with limited offerings. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady with a limited supply of straw. Small square bales averaged $4.15 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $38.00 per bale (a range of $20.00 to $70.00). Large round bale straw averaged $46.00 per bale (a range of $40.00 - $49.00). 

In Nebraska, hay prices were steady to strong with good demand for types of forage. There is a lot of out of state interest this week. In Iowa, supply is good, demand is steady, and prices are steady. 

In South Dakota, all classes of hay are firm. Drought rages on across the Dakota’s. Third cutting is taking place with reduced yields. 

In Missouri, prices are steady with moderate supply and limited sales. It is august and the state is green is good news. 

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady. 

In Kansas, market prices were steady, demand remains good for alfalfa. Most farmers use the term quiet when asked about interest in hay with some interest from out of state buyers. 

In Wisconsin, prices are steady for dairy quality hay. Lower quality or higher moisture hay is being discounted.
