Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Prices are steady to strong this week. Markets: Top quality hay prices were strong and lower quality hay was limited in market. If you have questions on this report contact richard.halopka@wisc.edu . Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady to strong. Small square bales averaged $5.60 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $46.00 per bale (a range of $33.00 to $72.00). Large round bale straw averaged $49.00 per bale (range of $33.00 – $60.00).

In Nebraska, trade activity and demand was moderate. Sellers looking for the market to pick up as winter weather sets in around New Year.  In Iowa, no report.

In South Dakota, all classes of hay had firm prices. Very good demand for dairy quality alfalfa hay. Supply is limited compared to previous years.

In Missouri, hay supply is moderate with light demand and steady prices. Mild weather is not forcing hay feeding at this time.

In Southwest Minnesota, no report. In Kansashay market prices remain steady, with undertones of weakness. There is a good supply of hay and prices are firm.

 In Wisconsin, prices are steady to strong for dairy quality hay.
