Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Welcome to 2022. Prices are steady too strong for dairy quality hay. Low quality hay was discounted. If you have questions on this report contact richard.halopka@wisc.edu . Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady to strong. Small square bales averaged $4.95 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $43.00 per bale (a range of $28.00 to $58.00). Large round bale straw averaged $40.00 per bale (range of $25.00 – $59.00).

In Nebraska, hay sold steady with demand that is sporadic. Many cattleman in state still have cattle on cornstalks.  In Iowa, no report.

In South Dakota, all classes of hay had steady price compared to last week. Good demand to very good demand for all classes of hay and straw.

In Missouri, hay supply is good with light demand and steady prices. Small orders are currently the most common.

In Southwest Minnesota, no report. In Kansashay market prices remain steady, with slow movement, but interest is growing with the start of the New Year. Drought concerns continue and may help generate sales down the road.

 In Wisconsin, prices are steady too strong for dairy quality hay.
