Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Top quality alfalfa continues to have a steady to strong market. Lower quality hay is discounted. Hay supply may tighten once fall arrives. Many low areas have been harvested this summer. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Limited supply at the auctions. Small square bales averaged $4.70 a bale (range of $4.00 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $54.00 per bale (a range of $30.00 to $82.00). Large round bale straw averaged $63.00 per bale (a range of $42.00 to $100.00).

In Nebraskahay is selling lower this week. Demand is light and variable.     

In South Dakota, Prices are steady with good demand. Rain in some areas of state have reduced drought, but concerns continue in areas of the state. 

In Missouri, hay supply is light; prices are steady, with good hay movement.   

In Kansasslow demand with steady prices and slow trade activity. State is in the haves and have nots when rainfall is concerned.   

In Wisconsin, prices for hay are steady. Hay yields are down in 2023. Dry weather concerns are in areas in the state.
