Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments

Corn silage harvest continues as bunkers and silos are being filled. Some farmers may be done with silage and some farmers will be harvesting fourth crop hay after a freeze. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Limited supply at the auctions. Small square bales averaged $4.60 a bale (range of $3.00 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $59.00 per bale (a range of $26.00 to $74.00). Large round bale straw averaged $58.00 per bale (a range of $35.00 to $80.00). Limited sales available.

In Nebraskaalfalfa hay prices are steady to weak. Very little activity as many are working in the field.      

In South Dakota, prices are steady with moderate demand. Top quality alfalfa for diary needs out of state is the greatest demand. 

In Missouri, prices are steady with little demand.   

In Kansasslow demand this week. Prices remain steady.  

In Wisconsin, prices for hay are steady. Corn silage harvest is wrapping up as bunkers and silos are being filled. There has been little interest in hay buying.
