Week Ending May 08, 2020
Compared to last week, baled hay sold steady. Ground and delivered alfalfa
sold steady to 15.00 lower. Dehy and sun-cured pellets sold unevenly steady.
Users of alfalfa pellets have been wanting to write large contracts on the
2020 production year. But, operators of those pellets are hesitant as most
of Nebraska weather has been cool this first part of May and alfalfa has
been slow to grow. Many processers like to fill bins with product from first
and second cutting before signing large contracts of product. Some feedlots
have started to look for additional roughage sources to help slow the gain
of slaughter cattle. There are a lot of cornstalk bales and grinding type
grass and alfalfa in various locations across the state. Crop progress from
NASS for week ending May 3, Corn planted was 61 percent, well ahead of 30
last year and 38 for the five-year average. Emerged was 9 percent, ahead of
1 last year, and near 5 average. Soybeans planted was 32 percent, well ahead
of 11 last year and 10 average. Oats planted was 87 percent, ahead of 69
last year, and near 84 average. Emerged was 56 percent, well ahead of 30
last year, but near 58 average. Note: “All sales are dollars per ton FOB the
field or hay barn, unless otherwise noted.”
