Week Ending January 10, 2020
Compared to last week, all baled hay, ground and delivered hay and
alfalfa pellets sold steady. Demand was light this first full week of the
New Year. Many contacts are trying to deliver hay that was sold in the
last couple of weeks. Some have been having a hard time as ground
conditions are soft and muddy. Most truckers are trying to load in the
morning when the temperatures are cold aiding in firming up the soft
ground and some have been loading alongside paved roadways to keep from
getting stuck. Some producers may have to start buying hay at calving
time or maybe later this month if winter grazing continues to be covered
up from snow. Forage availability is spotty across the state. Some
reports we have a lot of bales of forage to sell and other reports
sellable supply is getting short. Some contacts have been buying hay
from South Dakota at a cheaper price delivered than local hay producers’
asking price. Note: “All sales are dollars per ton FOB the field or hay
barn, unless otherwise noted.”
