Wyoming, Western Nebraska, and Western South Dakota Hay Report

Compared to last week, prices were mostly steady with activity and demand
light in all classes. The USDA Wyoming NRCS Monday Morning Snow Report for
March 13, 2017 has the Snake River Basin Snow Water Equivalent at 156%, the
Madison River basin at 130%, the Yellowstone Basin at 149%, the Wind River Basin
at 186%, the Bighorn Basin at 115%, the Shoshone River Basin at 176%, the Powder
Basin at 92%, the Tongue Basin at 110%, the Belle Fourche Basin at 60%, the
Cheyenne Basin at 74%, the Upper North Platte Basin at 121%, the Sweetwater
Basin at 209%, the Lower North Platte Basin at 113%, the Laramie Basin at 120%,
the South Platte Basin at 120%, the Little Snake River Basin at 123%, the Upper
Green Basin at 190%, the Lower Green Basin at 155%, and the Upper Bear Basin at
163% as a percent of the median of all SNOTEL sites in each basin compared to
previous years. According to the United States Drought Monitor, temperatures
were mixed over the high plains region. In the western portions, temperatures
were above normal, with departures of up to 5 degrees. Most of the rest of the
region was below normal, with departures of 5-10 degrees common in Kansas and
Nebraska and departures of 10-15 degrees below normal over the Dakotas. Almost
the entire region was dry during the week, with only portions of the Dakotas
recording precipitation associated with a fast-moving snow event. No changes
were made to the drought depiction for the region this week, but conditions are
being monitored closely as the short-term indicators have dried out
significantly over the last few weeks. All prices dollars per ton FOB stack in
large square bales and rounds, unless otherwise noted. Most horse hay sold in
small squares. Prices are from the most recent reported sales.
