Wyoming, Western Nebraska, and Western South Dakota Hay Report

Compared to last week, prices were mostly steady with activity and demand light in all classes. The USDA Wyoming NRCS Monday Morning Snow Report for March 19, 2017 has the Snake River Basin Snow Water Equivalent at 152%, the Madison River basin at 127%, the Yellowstone Basin at 146%, the Wind River Basin at 177%, the Bighorn Basin at 110%, the Shoshone River Basin at 170%, the Powder Basin at 87%, the Tongue Basin at 103%, the Belle Fourche Basin at 45%, the Cheyenne Basin at 59%, the Upper North Platte Basin at 117%, the Sweetwater Basin at 191%, the Lower North Platte Basin at 106%, the Laramie Basin at 117%, the South Platte Basin at 116%, the Little Snake River Basin at 113%, the Upper Green Basin at 182%, the Lower Green Basin at 142%, and the Upper Bear Basin at 154% as a percent of the median of all SNOTEL sites in each basin compared to previous years. According to the United States Drought Monitor, drier- and warmer-than-normal weather persisted, maintaining or worsening the region’s drought. Across southern Nebraska and much of Kansas, 7-day average temperatures up to 7°F above normal coupled with increasingly dry conditions noted out to 60 days (locally less than 25 percent of normal, deficits of 1 to 3 inches) led to widespread expansion of Abnormal Dryness (D0). All prices dollars per ton FOB stack in large square bales and rounds, unless otherwise noted. Most horse hay sold in small squares. Prices are from the most recent reported sales.
