Ground alfalfa movement:  Southwest/South Central

Hay market activity slow to moderate; demand light to moderate for all classes 
of hay; prices steady. Although the snow has now melted in western Kansas, it 
left behind plenty of destruction, such as broken power poles and trees and 
damaged alfalfa and wheat. Hopes of swathing first cutting alfalfa last week was 
put on hold for those who received rain, as it was too wet to get into the 
fields. However, the sun finally came out over the weekend, bringing warmer 
temperatures and helping to dry out fields. The U.S. Drought Monitor affirms 
that the abnormally dry (D0) category has been completely eliminated. Per NASS: 
top soil moisture rated 0 pct very short, 1 pct short, 69 pct adequate and 30 
pct surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 0 pct very short, 6 pct short, 79 pct 
adequate and 15 pct surplus. Pasture and range conditions rated 1 pct very poor, 
3 pct poor, 22 pct fair, 61 pct good and 13 pct excellent, and alfalfa hay first

moderate. Alfalfa: horse, small squares 240.00-250.00. Dairy, .75-.85/point RFV, 
Supreme 140.00-160.00, Premium 130.00-150.00, Good 115.00-145.00.  Stock or Dry 
Cow alfalfa, 75.00-95.00, with an instance at 110.00.  Fair/Good grinding 
alfalfa, 85.00-100.00. New crop grinding alfalfa 95.00-100.00. Ground and 
delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 110.00-120.00, with instances at 
130.00 and 140.00.  New crop ground and delivered 120.00-130.00.  The week of 
4/30-5/6, 10,843T of grinding alfalfa and 1,813T of dairy alfalfa were

South Central Kansas
