California Hay Report

  Compared to last week: All classes traded steady with very good demand.    
According to the NASS Crop Progess Report 4/30/18, A high pressure system in the 
early part of the week brought about mainly sunny and above normal temperatures 
across the state. Temperatures in the southeast interior reported in the low 
100s, well above the average. An upper-level low moved into the region during 
the latter part of the past week, which brought cooler weather, as well as 
showers into the northwestern part of the state.  Temperature highs for the week 
ranged in the 60s to 80s along the coast, 70s to 80s in the mountains, 80s to 
90s in the valley, and 80s to 100s in the desert. Temperature lows for the week 
ranged in the 20s to 30s in the mountains, 40s to 50s in the valley, 40s to 50s 
along the coast, and 30s to 60s in the desert region.  Rice planting commenced 
last week for some growers, while others continued to prepare the fields for 
planting.  Alfalfa fields continued to mature and were harvested.  Growers in 
Sacramento County had their first cut of alfalfa for the season.  Safflower and 
sunflower fields were planted and began to emerge.  Corn was planted as weather 
and soil conditions permitted. Winter wheat and oats, were cut, dried, and 
baled.  After a late start this year due to threats of cool weather, cotton 
planting continued and quickly progressed.  Hay is reported FOB the stack or
