Iowa Hay Summary

Week Ending May 11th, 2018

For this week: Prices trended mostly steady. Demand was light to moderate. Rain and warmer temps have revitalized pasture conditions statewide, and allowed for cattle to be turned out for grazing in many areas. Looking forward to the coming week highs seem to be in the low 80's with scattered thunderstorms in the early to middle part of the week, possibly limiting fieldwork.

According to the Iowa Crop Progress & Condition report due to widespread storms giving way to heavy rainfall planting activities interrupted fieldwork time allowing only 2.9 days of suitable fieldwork. 40 percent of the expected corn in Iowa has been planted. Soybeans are 11 percent planted. Seventy-Seven percent of the expected oat crop has been planted. Rain and warmer temps have revitalized pasture conditions statewide, and allowed for cattle to be turned out for grazing in many areas.

According to the Drought Monitor abnormally dry conditions decreased slightly to 39.46% down from 41.92% the previous week. Moderate drought conditions also slightly decreased slightly to 12.64% down from 14.18% the previous week. The decreases we are result of rainfall accumulations of 2-to-3 inches. In northeastern Iowa 3-to-5 inches of rain fell this week helping to improve soil moisture and streamflow conditions. All prices FOB per ton unless otherwise noted.
