Iowa Hay Summary

Week Ending  May 4th, 2018


For this week: Prices trended steady to 10.00 higher. Demand was good, with many people running low or out of hay.
Supply was moderate to instances light. The extended winter season this year has left hay in short supply for some livestock producers and pastures in many areas need rain to help sprur growth. Weather for this coming week looks sunny allowing for ample field work time. Temperatures reamin in the mid to low 70's.  

According to the Iowa Crop Progress & Condition report there were 4.7 days suitable for 
fieldwork for the week ending April 29, 2018. Field work this week included planting of corn and soybeans in addition to soil preperation and fertilizer application. South central Iowa remains dry with over one-third of subsoil rated very short on moisture. 17 percent of the expected corn in Iowa has been planted. Northern Iowa remains wet from melting snow, slowing planting; however, south central and southeast iowa already have at least 40% of their corn planted.Soybeans are 2 percent planted. Sixty-two percent of the expected oat crop has been planted. 

According to the Drought Monitor on this weeks map ending April 29th, 2018 abnormally dry conditions increased significantly this week from 19.91% to 41.92%. Moderate drought conditions doubled from 7.45% to 14.18%, which is focused in the southern portion of the state. All prices FOB per ton unless otherwise noted.
