Week ending 05/04/2018 Farmers around the state have made good use of the favorable weather the last week and a half. Last week over 36 percent of the corn crop was planted in the state and no doubt this week has seen solid progress as well. Winter wheat condition is rated at 40 percent fair and 44 percent good. Only 4 percent of the crop is headed, 69 percentage points behind last year and 23 percentage points behind the 5-year average. There has been some reports of farmers who have decided to just cut the crop for hay rather than wait for grain harvest. Also several reports of plans to start cutting and wrapping some bales for haylage in the next week. Grass around many areas of the state especially to the north continues to be very slow to get started growing and there are still several folks looking for hay. State wide pasture conditions are rated 23 percent poor, 53 percent fair and 20 percent good. Hay supplies are light to moderate, demand is light to moderate and prices are steady. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both buyers and sellers.
