Colorado Hay Report

Compared to last week, trade activity and demand moderate. Small Squares of
retail/stable hay readily clearing the market at regionalized prices. Hay
producers that typically market dairy quality hay are hesitant to sell at
current offers of 1.00 dollar per point RFV. Lower quality alfalfa for grinder
hay is starting to move in larger volumes. While few areas of the state are
just finishing first cutting, regions across the state that received higher
temps over the past couple weeks are preparing for second cutting. According to
the U.S Drought Monitor’s High Plains Summary released July 9, 2019, Conditions
remained essentially unchanged, though there was some limited southwestern
expansion of moderate drought. Subnormal short-term rainfall has been observed
in a few areas across central and western Kansas and eastern portions of
Nebraska, but D0 introduction was not yet warranted. According to the NASS
Colorado Crop Progress Report for week ending July 7, 2019, stored feed supplies
were rated 1 percent very short, 18 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 6
percent surplus; 1st cutting alfalfa hay progress is at 95 percent, 2nd cutting
16 percent. The next available report will be Thursday, July 18, 2019. All
prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices
reflect load lots of hay. If you have hay for sale or need hay, use the
services of the Colorado Department of Agriculture website:
