Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
Hay prices were steady with limited activity this past week. Reduced auctions during the summer months, new crop hay coming into the market, discounted prices on old crop hay, discounted prices on lower quality hay, and farmers too busy to buy hay are contributing factors. If you have excess hay or forages to sell or are looking to buy forage, connect to the Farmer-to-Farmer webpage at http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu/ to place an ad for your needs or what you have to sell. Contact your local county agriculture agent if you need help placing an ad. There is no charge for the service.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady, old crop hay is discounted. There is a greater demand for big square bales. Good weather should help wrap up first cutting. In Iowa, new crop hay is coming to the market and being snapped up. Small grains are coming off the field and straw should be available in the next week or so.

In South Dakota, prices are steady with good demand for new crop hay. Small grain harvest has begun and straw should arrive at market in next week or so.
In Missouri, hay supplies and demand are moderate, with steady prices. First crop harvest is wrapping up with good weather.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady with light demand and with a slight increase in hay available. In Kansas, market activity and demand are moderate with steady prices.

In Wisconsin, prices remain strong with demand for hay. Finally, some weather to allow farmers a chance to get in fields and make first crop. With a late harvest, quality of the first cut may be lower than what many dairy farms are used to feeding their herds. Hay supplies are tight in WI.

Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Prices were steady with a scarce supply of straw. Small square bales averaged $3.30 a bale (range of $1.50 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $49.00 per bale (a range of $33.00 to $65.00). Large round bale straw averaged $67.00 per bale (a wide range of $46.00 - $87.00). With small grains beginning to be harvested straw supply may increase in the near future.
