South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: Alfalfa and grass hay mostly steady after
last week’s decline. Demand remains good for high quality hay of
all classes, straw as well. Demand much more moderate for lower
qualities, especially the rougher hay, grinding type hay. Heavy
rains along with very high dew points plagued hay growers again this
week. This year has been very similar to last year for hay growers
in SE SD as the rains have been so frequent that it has been about
impossible to put up alfalfa hay without getting rain on it. Some
lowland, or just flat fields, have yet to be cut as the ground conditions
are simply too wet. Drier weather in the forecast for next week, along
with lower relative humidity will hopefully allow growers to make some
high quality, dry hay. West River hay producers are busy haying and have
also had to work around the rains. All hay and straw sold by the ton
FOB, unless otherwise noted.
