South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to two weeks ago: Alfalfa and grass hay 15.00 to 20.00
lower. Moderate demand for lower quality hay, as supplies more
plentiful than the high quality hay. Good demand for high quality
alfalfa, alfalfa/grass mix, and straight grass hay. Persistent rains,
heavy at times, along with high dew points has made it difficult in
East River to put up high quality, dry hay. West River hay producers
are busy haying and have also had to work around the rains. Carryover
supplies of old crop hay were limited this year which really ramped up
demand, and now when combined with the late spring and very wet weather
that delayed hay cutting really pushed the demand for hay much higher
than what would be normally seen for this time of year. Now, however,
hay growers have been able to put up some new crop hay and now there is
a more readily available supply on hand. Quality remains the issue
though as every week has brought rain. All hay and straw sold by the ton
FOB, unless otherwise noted.
