Colorado Hay Report

Compared to last week, trade activity and demand light. The higher
elevations of the mountains and northwest Colorado areas are hoping to start
cutting grass hay after the weather moves through at the end of the week.
Retail/Stable hay prices in the southwest Colorado areas have softened as above
normal hay production occurred. Light volumes of feedlot and dairy hay moved
this last week, mostly in the southern part of the state. According to the U.S
Drought Monitor’s High Plains Summary released July 23, 2019, rainfall across
the High Plains has been heavy at times in recent weeks, and most rangeland and
pastures are in good shape. According to USDA on July 21, rangeland and pastures
were rated at least 70% good to excellent in each of the region’s six states
(CO, KS, NE, ND, SD, and WY). The remainder of the High Plains remained free of
dryness and drought. According to the NASS Colorado Crop Progress Report for
week ending July 21, 2019, stored feed supplies were rated 1 percent very short,
13 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus; 2nd cutting
alfalfa hay progress is at 41 percent. The next available report will be
Thursday, August 1, 2019. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn
unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay. If you have hay for
sale or need hay, use the services of the Colorado Department of Agriculture
