Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 10,342/5,131 Last week: 8,423/5,320 Last year: 7,748/5,976
Hay market trade slow; Prices steady. Most producers report demand as light
with a few isolated increases in deliveries and the supply of hay is
moderate. In addition, the majority of producers have been busy combating the
insects. K-State Entomology reports that weevil activity has significantly
increased with in the last week, particularly in the north central region.
Although the cold weather will slow down the weevils feeding activity, it
won't be cold enough to kill very many larvae. According to the U.S. Drought
Monitor, west-central Kansas saw minor improvements in areas of Abnormally
Dry (D0) conditions, while drought-related conditions deteriorated in
southwestern Kansas, where an area of Severe Drought (D2) worsened. Abnormal
dryness (D0) decreased to 3 pct, moderate drought (D1) decreased slightly to
3.7 pct, and severe drought (D2) increased to 2.4 pct. If you have any extra hay
