Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last report: Hay trades are steady in all regions. Rain
accumulation ranging from 2 to 5 inches finally fell in South Texas,
which provided some much-needed drought relief across the area.
Excessive rain in the North, Central, and Eastern regions of the state
continues to limit fieldwork. According to Vanessa Corriher-Olson,
Ph.D., AgriLife Extension forage specialist, moisture levels are good for
much of the state going into hay production season. However, erratic
weather for much of the late winter, which has impacted cool-season
forage growth. Hay trades in the Panhandle and West Texas have been
limited due to uncertainty in the cattle markets. Feedlots and dairies
in the regions are buying strictly on an as needed basis and are waiting
to stock up on additional feed supplies until uncertainties in the
markets are better understood.

The Texas Department of Agriculture has Hay and Grazing phone set
