Week Ending May 01, 2020
Compared to last week, all reported forages sold steady. Demand was
moderate for baled hay with good demand for alfalfa pellets. With pasture
grass slow to grow this April some cattlemen are having to procure
another load or two of hay to get them through till they can turn out on
summer grass. Few, reports of a light freeze this week in some areas of
the state. Some from dehy operators are hoping to start with production
the middle part of May. Some farmers are done with corn planning and have
switch over to soybeans. So far 2020 weather on the most part has been
more favorable than 2019 for planting and calving. Some hay that was sold
to out of state dairies has been turned down by their buyers are the
sellers of the hay are looking for new buyers. Note: “All sales are
dollars per ton FOB the field or hay barn, unless otherwise noted.”
