Colorado Hay Report

Compared to last week, prices were steady with activity and demand good in
all classes. 2017 alfalfa cutting is underway throughout the state. Growers
are reporting pest problems in the southwest region of the state. Growers are
reporting large increases in supreme hay prices compared to last year. The NASS
Colorado Crop Progress and Condition report for the week ending July 2, 2017
states that, isolated hail damage midweek was reported in eastern counties.
Warm temperatures sustained in northeastern Colorado helped in crop development,
but also resulted in an increase in fire danger and the additional need to
irrigate crops. Southeastern Colorado experienced warm and dry weather. In
Southwestern Colorado, reporters stated that livestock pond water was getting
low. Stored feed supplies were rated 2 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and
14 percent surplus. Sheep death loss was 71 percent average and 29 percent
light. Cattle death loss was 1 percent heavy, 80 percent average, and 19
percent light. Alfalfa is 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 55 percent good, and
9 percent excellent. Alfalfa first cutting is 94 percent complete with second
cutting 8 percent complete. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn
unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay. If you have hay for
