Compared to last week, prices were steady with activity and demand good in all classes. 2017 alfalfa cutting is underway throughout the state. Growers are reporting pest problems in the southwest region of the state. Growers are reporting large increases in supreme hay prices compared to last year. The NASS Colorado Crop Progress and Condition report for the week ending July 2, 2017 states that, isolated hail damage midweek was reported in eastern counties. Warm temperatures sustained in northeastern Colorado helped in crop development, but also resulted in an increase in fire danger and the additional need to irrigate crops. Southeastern Colorado experienced warm and dry weather. In Southwestern Colorado, reporters stated that livestock pond water was getting low. Stored feed supplies were rated 2 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus. Sheep death loss was 71 percent average and 29 percent light. Cattle death loss was 1 percent heavy, 80 percent average, and 19 percent light. Alfalfa is 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Alfalfa first cutting is 94 percent complete with second cutting 8 percent complete. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay.
