Week Ending July 13, 2017
Compared to last week round bales of alfalfa are steady, square bales
steady. Grass hay is steady. Ground and delivered hay steady. Dehy alfalfa
pellets steady. Buyer inquiry picked up a lot this week as some areas of the
state drier than normal for this time of year and some pastures are short and
brown. Many mentioned received light rains; however, much of the region remains
dry. Several reports of millet or cane hay that was planted on dryland fields is
very short or never sprouted due to lack of moisture. Most producers are on
second cutting of alfalfa with a few on third cutting in the Eastern side of the
state. Native grass producers have stated that early tonnage a little less than
last year but the hay quality is very good. Temperatures in the high 90’s to low
100’s the next several days will continue to take moisture out of area fields of
grass and crops. According to NASS’s Crop Progress and Condition Report for
Nebraska, 14 percent of corn is silking, 51 percent of soybeans are blooming,
and 61 percent of alfalfa is in good or excellent condition. All sales are
dollars per ton FOB the field or hay barn, unless otherwise noted.
