Hay movement picks up in some areas

In Nebraska and the East River area of South Dakota, alfalfa and grass hay sold fully steady. Ground and delivered hay and dehydrated alfalfa pellets sold steady. Demand is sporadic, according to the USDA Market News Service, June 23. Prices given on per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Eastern/central—Supreme new crop alfalfa, large squares, $180; premium, large squares, $135-$155; good, round bales, $70-$80. Good old crop, large squares, $120-$130; fair large squares, $80-$90. Grass hay, new crop, brome, large rounds, $90 delivered, small squares grass hay, $5/bale. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $200-$210.

Platte Valley—Good new crop alfalfa, rounds $75-$80. Ground and delivered alfalfa, $90-$100. Ground and delivered cornstalks, $70-$75. Dehydrated pellets, 17% protein, $185-$210. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $160.

East River area of South Dakota—Supreme new crop alfalfa, large squares, $145-$165; good/premium, large squares, $140-$160; good, large rounds, old crop, $100; fair, large rounds, new crop clippings, $80; utility, large rounds, old crop, $85. In Iowa, all classes of hay lower. Lighter demand.

In Minnesota, alfalfa grass hay steady.

In Montana, hay prices sold mostly sharply higher, with most sales $10-$15 higher. Sales are all new crop hay unless otherwise noted. Demand for all hay is good to very good on light supplies. Montana will be released by-weekly until early August when heavier receipts can be confirmed.

In Wyoming, western Nebraska and western South Dakota, prices were mostly steady with no test to compare the other reported regions. Trade activity slow as first cutting alfalfa is getting put up. Demand was good to very good in all regions due to drought conditions in Montana and the Dakotas.

In Colorado, prices were steady with activity light and good demand in all classes.

In Missouri, hay movement is light, supplies are moderate, demand is light and prices are steady to weak.

In Oklahoma, alfalfa trade mostly moderate, slightly improved over recent weeks. The bulk of movement consisted of Premium and Good quality alfalfa moving to dairies. Grass hay movement was mostly light to moderate in central and eastern counties.
