Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 10,217/3,893 Last week: 10,543/4,357 Last year: 7,115/4,200
Hay market activity slow to moderate; demand moderate for grinding alfalfa,
light for all other classes of hay; prices mostly steady to slightly higher.
Above normal summer time temperatures continued to dry Kansas out with triple
digit temperatures and a hot, dry southern breeze. Although many areas received
some scattered rain, it has not been enough to relieve crop stress. Per NASS,
Kansas alfalfa hay condition rated 1 pct very poor, 5 poor, 28 fair, 62 good,
and 4 excellent. Second cutting was 97 pct complete, near 93 both last year and
the average. Third cutting was 49 pct complete well ahead of 28 pct last year
and ahead of 31 pct average. Abnormally dry conditions have spread to half the
counties in the state. The abnormally dry (D0) category has increased to 39.72
pct and moderate drought (D1), has moved into 13 north central counties and
stands at 5.30 pct. If you have hay for sale, and/or need hay here in Kansas,
