Missouri Weekly Hay Summary

Pasture conditions continue to be very pleasing, especially for the first of 
August. Haying is still taking place around the state and there isn’t much 
change with the market as hay prices seem to have settled at least for the 
time being. Given this is a somewhat slow week as far as hay news goes, The 
Department of Agriculture would like to issue a reminder for those selling 
hay to always be aware and trust their instincts when completing hay 
transactions. Those who have been in the hay business very long are likely 
aware of the scam that shows up and makes the rounds and every few years. 
The way the scam works is that hay producers are contacted by someone 
claiming they are interested in making a purchase. The producer then 
receives a substantial check and is asked to wire transfer funds to a truck 
hauler that will supposedly pick up the bales of hay. The producer then 
finds out days or sometimes weeks later that the original check has bounced. 
The scam is similar to some types of online fraud. So far there have been no 
reported victims to this attempted fraud and the best advice is if something 
seems fishy it probably is. The Hay supplies are moderate, demand is 
moderate. Hay prices are mostly steady.  The Missouri Department of
