South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

****Note, this report will not be released again until Sep. 6, 2019.****

Compared to last week: Alfalfa and grass remain rather steady, sales
remain limited. Demand moderate to good at times, better for high
testing dairy quality hay but little of that type has been made this year
due to the persistent rains. Plentiful supplies of lower quality hay and
the coming harvest of cover crops has buyers taking a wait and see
approach to the hay market. Best demand is coming from out of state
buyers. Third cutting of alfalfa starting to be made, the potential for
high quality looks good if the forecast remains dry. Straw baling going
on currently as the wheat harvest wraps up. Second cutting of grass hay
underway East River. West River hay producers still trying to complete
their haying for the year and haven’t marketed much yet. All hay and
straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise noted.
