Weekly Montana Hay Report

Compared to last report: Alfalfa hay sold generally steady this week as the full
market for hay continues to develop. Demand was mostly moderate for moderate to 
heavy offerings. Hay in squares continues to move on good demand as much of
this hay is leaving the state. Demand for round bales is mostly light. Many ranchers
put up their own hay. With last year’s carry over and additional hay from this
year many ranchers have nearly a two-year supply of hay in rounds. This has 
severely limited demand for hay in rounds. Much of 2nd cutting was put up without
rain and quality reports are mostly positive. Demand for grass hay remains very 
good especially in squares. Much of this hay is selling into Canada through brokers. 
Demand for straw is good as dairies in Idaho are searching for straw, however with
harvest just underway no straw prices have been confirmed. All prices below are new 
crop hay unless otherwise noted. All prices are dollars per ton and FOB unless
