Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
There is demand for quality hay and prices are steady. Lower quality hay is sharply discounted. First cutting is being harvested and some new crop hay is being sold in the market. Overall reports are that alfalfa first cutting is yielding a tick below average across the Midwest. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw was limited as many auctions reported no straw was available this week. Small square bales averaged $4.40 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $48.00 per bale (a range of $22.00 to $70.00). Large round bale straw averaged $44.00 per bale (a range of $20.00 - $65.00).

In Nebraska, all types of forage sold steady on a thin test. Typically this is common for the first week of June. There is optimism to market hay as dairy prices were stronger. In Iowa, prices on all types of hay were steady.

In South Dakota, there were few reports this week to provide a market comparison on hay prices. Good demand from dairies for new crop alfalfa. Many reported weather has cooperated with making first cut alfalfa.

In Missouri, hay prices are mostly steady with light demand. Weather has cooperated with getting hay cut and dry, before rain came mid-week. Yields have been OK.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady with a limited supply of quality hay at the market. In Kansas, hay trade is slow, with light demand. Most farmers are busy in the field. Many are reporting first cut is short and yields are below average.

In Wisconsin, prices are steady for quality hay. There was a good crowd with a smaller supply of hay and some new crop alfalfa at the market from the Dakota’s.
