Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last report:  New crop hay is now trading in all regions.  
New crop in the Panhandle, West, and North, Central, and East Texas is 
10.00 to 30.00 lower per ton than old crop pricing.  New crop hay in 
South Texas is steady with old crop prices, but demand has slowed down in 
the area with recent rains rejuvenating pastures in the area.  According 
to the US Drought Monitor, precipitation has averaged less than 50 
percent of normal across much of western Oklahoma and the Texas 
Panhandle. This lack of rainfall coupled with periods of much above 
normal temperatures and strong winds have dried out topsoil’s quickly.  
However, improvements in drought like conditions by as much as 2 
categories are being reported along the gulf coast due to tropical storm 
Cristobal.  Warmer drier weather in the East has dried out bottomland 
meadows, allowing producers to begin harvesting those areas.
