Compared to last week: Hay prices sold fully steady. Hay sales are
light to moderate this week. Producers are starting to wrap up 2nd cutting
in western Montana, while eastern Montana is working on 3rd cutting. Demand
for hay is mostly light as supplies are heavy across the state. With cattle
out on grass ranchers have yet to step up and buy hay for winter, and with
heavy supplies ranchers haven’t seen a need to either. Export demand for
hay is light to moderate and offers have been passed by most producers.
Straw sales are slow but have started to show up as harvest is getting
underway. Colorado and Texas buyers continue to pick up Montana hay in
extreme south central Montana. Sales have started to slow though. All
prices are dollars per ton and FOB unless otherwise noted.
