Iowa Hay Summary

Week Ending August 17, 2018
This weeks prices were mostly steady with last weeks however, the bottom eside of the
hay prices were slightly lower. These lower prices were more reflective of the quality
of hay and straw. Grassy and weedy straw and in some instances hay were discounted.
High humidity has made making hay more of a challenge. The southern part of Iowa has
started into making their third cutting while some growers in the northeast are still
struggling to get their first cutting of alfalfa baled. Some growers in southern Iowa
will not even try to make a third cutting as drought conditions have stunted both hay
growth and pasture regeneration.
