Compared to last week, trade activity light on light to moderate
demand. The price spread between dairy quality alfalfa and grinder hay
continues to grow due to inventories. According to the U.S Drought
Monitor’s High Plains Summary released March 3, 2020, some D1 was added
over northeast Colorado with YTD precipitation 50 to 65 percent of
normal. Stream flows were also running well below normal for this area.
Recent ground observations support this addition of D1. SPIs over several
time periods also show deterioration. The rest of the High Plains Region
has long-term surpluses of precipitation. No D0 development expansion was
made elsewhere. According to the USDA NRCS Colorado SNOTEL
Snow/Precipitation Update Report for Thursday, March 5, 2020, snow water
equivalent basin index percentages: Gunnison 93; Upper Colorado 114;
South Platte 125; Laramie and North Platte 114; Yampa and White 114;
Arkansas 110; Upper Rio Grande 95; San Miguel, Delores, Animas and San
Juan 88. The next available report will be Thursday, March 12, 2020.
All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted.
