Colorado Hay Report

   Compared to last week, trade activity light on light to moderate
demand. The price spread between dairy quality alfalfa and grinder hay
continues to grow due to inventories. According to the U.S Drought
Monitor’s High Plains Summary released March 12, 2020, D1 was expanded a
bit in northeastern Colorado (i.e. existing D1 areas were connected).
This area has continued to experience warmer-than-average temperatures in
recent weeks, which has had adverse effects on winter wheat and
rangelands prior to green-up. In addition to SPIs showing D1 (and worse
over longer periods at a couple locations), USGS stream flows in
surrounding locations were showing flows below the 10th percentile. Some
drier-than-normal conditions crept into eastern portions of the Dakotas
over the past 30 days (25 to 50 percent of normal precipitation, with
some small areas of 10 to 25 percent of normal in extreme eastern South
Dakota). However, 60- and 90-day precipitation was near and above normal,
respectively, for these areas. Therefore, it was status quo for the rest
of the High Plains Region. According to the USDA NRCS Colorado SNOTEL
Snow/Precipitation Update Report for Thursday, March 12, 2020, snow water
equivalent basin index percentages:  Gunnison 90; Upper Colorado 110;
South Platte 120; Laramie and North Platte 113; Yampa and White 112;
Arkansas 105; Upper Rio Grande 93; San Miguel, Delores, Animas and San
Juan 84. The next available report will be Thursday, March 19, 2020.
All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted.
Prices reflect load lots of hay. If you have hay for sale or need hay,
