Week Ending March 06, 2020
Compared to last week, alfalfa hay sold steady to 5.00 lower. Grass hay
steady, ground and delivered hay and alfalfa pellets sold steady. With
warm, sunny weather demand has soften for the time being on large round
bales of alfalfa. However, demand remains good for large squares that
can be easily shipped out of state. Demand was light to moderate for
grass hay, ground and delivered products with good demand for alfalfa
pellets. Most sectors of the Ag industry across the state have felt the
crunch from the CME downspin in Feb and through the first week of March.
With less dollars going back to the producers from livestock and grain
sales, cattlemen appear they are not going to buy extra feed resources to
just sit around and look at. They will procure a load or two of hay when
they absolutely need it. Livestock owners are hoping the weather will
stay fairly warm and they will have enough feed on hand to get to summer
grass. Some contacts said with the current warm and windy days they are
out baling cornstalks. Several reports in various areas, there are
several tons of baled cornstalks sitting in the field waiting for someone
to buy them. With spring tillage around the corner, farmers will be
chopping at the bit to get those bales off the field. Note: “All sales
are dollars per ton FOB the field or hay barn, unless otherwise noted.”
